Universal Design: Creating Homes That Work for Everyone
Design isn’t just about how something looks, it’s about how it works. And when it comes to home remodeling, few approaches are more thoughtful or forward-thinking than universal design.
At Henderer Design + Build + Remodel, we believe your home should be a place that supports you and your loved ones through every stage of life. Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, recovering from an injury, aging in place, or simply planning for the future, universal design offers a more innovative, more inclusive way to remodel.
What is universal design?
Universal design is the concept of designing spaces that are usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized features. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), it means creating environments that are accessible, functional, and welcoming, no matter a person’s age, size, or ability.
But here’s the key: universal design isn’t just about accessibility. It’s about comfort. It’s about beauty. It’s about crafting homes that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re a prize-winning athlete or using a mobility aid. The goal is to build spaces that feel good and work well now, while also adapting seamlessly as your needs change.
The 7 principles of universal design
These seven guiding principles, developed by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University, offer a clear framework for applying Universal Design in homes, public spaces, and products. They help ensure that environments are not only accessible, but also intuitive and comfortable for everyone.
1. Equitable use. The design is valuable and marketable to people with diverse abilities.
2. Flexibility in use. It accommodates a wide range of preferences and individual skills.
3. Simple and intuitive use. The design is easy to understand, regardless of experience or background.
4. Perceptible information. It communicates necessary information clearly and effectively.
5. Tolerance for error. The design minimizes the risks of accidents or unintended actions.
6. Low physical effort. Spaces and tools can be used comfortably by anyone, with minimal fatigue.
7. Size and space for approach and use. There’s adequate space for approach, reach, and use, regardless of mobility level or body size.
Universal design features that make a big impact
Many universal design elements are subtle yet smart changes that make everyday life easier, for everyone. Here are some of the most effective features we incorporate into remodels:
For entry and navigation:
- No-step entryways for easy access
- Wider doorways (32–36″) and hallways (36–42″) for better flow
- Non-slip flooring and flush thresholds to prevent trips and falls
For kitchen and bath functionality:
- Curbless showers with built-in benches and grab bars
- Multi-height countertops for comfortable use while seated or standing
- Appliance controls with large print or tactile feedback
For everyday ease:
- Lever handles and rocker switches that are easier to operate
- Good lighting and visual contrast to improve visibility
- One-story living or accessible main-floor spaces for sleeping, cooking, and bathing
These aren’t just accessibility upgrades, they’re quality-of-life upgrades. As OSU Extension puts it: “Universally designed homes and public buildings can be just as beautiful and welcoming as any other design approach.”
It’s not just about aging, it’s about living
While universal design is often associated with aging-in-place, the truth is that everyone benefits from a more usable, intuitive space. Young families with strollers, homeowners recovering from surgery, visiting grandparents, and even busy professionals carrying groceries or laundry all enjoy the advantages of a well-designed, adaptable home.
Instead of thinking of it as “designing for disability,” think of it as designing for flexibility. A home that works for everyone is a home that’s prepared for anything.
